This article examines the debates surrounding the populist experience in the United States during the late nineteenth century. It explores whether the origins of the conceptual fluctuations in the understanding of populism can be traced to this historical moment, given that interpretations of the phenomenon have oscillated between vindication and disapproval. In this context, the article also considers whether Richard Hofstadter can be regarded as a key figure in the derogatory reconfiguration of populism insofar as many contemporary definitions have been shaped by a predominantly negative perspective. Furthermore, it argues that the trajectory of populism has not been purely theoretical but has been deeply entangled with political struggles. Finally, the discussion is shifted to an epistemological level, suggesting that the debate remains unresolved because both positions are grounded in monist assumptions.
