Family farming is a form of production whose significance has developed according to different perspectives introduced by knowledge, shifting from a subsidized alternative, through a regional integration policy, to an expression of cultural and environmental biodiversity that enables sustainability. It earned a place in the political agenda at national, regional and global spheres, as an open concept characterized by the vulnerability of its actors, yet with the potential to become a real alternative for food production compatible with current environmental discourses. Its conceptualization has made its way, from social and political organizations contesting hegemonic positions, to the main agendas of international organizations. In Uruguay, the same process is taking place in terms of legal and institutional evolution. However, the implementation of these new agendas persists as a challenge. In this context, the need for a real appropriation of these policies by the actors directly linked to the territory to ensure their vindication arises.
