Abstract

This document presents descriptive data on the religion and religiosity of Uruguayans. The data are analyzed in relation to different topics such as tolerance, religious beliefs, spirituality and politics. The data come from the 2008 National Public Opinion Survey on Religion and Religiosity conducted by the Department of Economics (decon-fcs), within the framework of the International Social Survey Programme (issp). More than half of the Uruguayan population declares that they profess the Catholic faith, while almost 30% say they have no religion at all. Although there is a low intensity of religious practice, this contrasts with an important tendency towards spirituality outside the formal sphere.
