Resumen

This article has aimed to analyse how the participation of the Spanish national football team in the 1950 World Cup was used as a political instrument. To achieve this goal, a documentary research both in Spanish pro-Franco newspapers and a Brazilian sports journal “Jornal dos Sports” was carried out, searching for news related to the matches played by the Spanish team during the 1950 World Cup. The conclusion is that football was used politically by the dictatorship set up by Franco and that the participation of the Spanish national team in the Brazilian World Cup was cleverly used by the Francoist leaders to enhance the image of Spain before the rest of the world.
